Built atop the same platform as the Bronco, this midsize truck has been redesigned from the ground up and slots in between the smaller Maverick and the larger F-150.

4X2 models will have 9.3 inches of ground clearance, while 4X4 models get 10.4 inches. It’s also around 2” wider which gives it a more pronounced stance and also allows 4 ft sheets of plywood or whatever you have that’s 4 ft. to fit in the bed. Payload capacity has a 1,805 lbs max, and the cargo area has tie-down points to secure loads.

The tailgate doubles as a workbench with a ruler, clamp points, and bottle opener. There’s even an available box mounted side-step for quick access to the bed that’s wide enough to accommodate both feet, and can support up to 300 lbs. The new Ranger will only be offered in a 4X2 or 4X4 ShortBed Supercrew configuration for seating up to 5, but that longer wheelbase should translate to some improved space for its completely redesigned interior.

Apart from the lack of vents, the rear quarters provide added functionality with under-seat storage , and a new feature allowing you to fold the rear seats flat. Back up front, the Ranger has a new modern layout with a horizontal design and some good tech. There’s a new available 12.4-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12-inch infotainment screen that supports the latest Sync 4a operating system, standard wireless Apple CarPlay and android auto. Higher trims will get a short throw e-shifter which helps with parking tasks, while lower trims receive a mechanical shifter.

Two engine options will be available for the Ranger. A 2.3L Ecoboost inline-4 cylinder or a 2.7L Ecoboost V6, both linked to a 10-speed automatic transmission and 6 drive modes. With available class-exclusive features including pro-trailer backup assist and trailer reverse guidance, and will now have a trailer grade controller.

If a little more fun is what you’re after, Ford introduces the Ranger Raptor with a 3.0L twin turbo V6 with a 10-speed automatic transmission and full-time 4WD. There’s a 2-speed transfer case, front locking differential, rear-drive with electronic locking differential, and added drive modes. Maximum towing and payload go down to 5,510 and 1,411 lbs respectively, but who cares because you get those Raptor decals, 10.7 inches of ground clearance, cast aluminum running boards, 33-inch tires with 17-inch bead lock wheels, and Fox® Live Valve shocks. Even the inside looks exciting with bright contrast trim pieces on the dash and the Raptor logo on the seats and steering wheel.

The new Ranger will include Ford CoPilot-360 with available features like lane Centering, Blind Spot Monitor with Cross-Traffic Alert and trailer coverage, Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Active Park Assist 2.0, Evasive Steering Assist, Reverse Braking Assist, and Forward Collision Warning.

Pricing hasn’t been announced, but there will be 3 trims available: XL, XLT, and Lariat. Well, 4 trims if you count the Ranger Raptor. The Ranger looks to compete with the newly redesigned Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier, Honda Ridgeline, and of course the Toyota Tacoma. Lots of competition, but the Ranger presents a lot of class-exclusive tech, engine options, and a Raptor.
